Task

Customization is often synonymous with luxury in the automotive industry. Consumers are increasingly requesting the customized styling elements and interior designs previously reserved for premium cars. Auto manufacturers need a way to satisfy consumer wants without the luxury-car price point.

Challenge

High-quality surfaces and customized automotive interior components were previously cost-prohibitive outside the premium car segment. To bring these features to a broader range of consumers, automakers must find a new material and process while maintaining cost-effective production.

Solution

In its “Surface Technologies” project, Covestro developed an integrated polycarbonate-based material and process concept suitable for cost-effective production of lightweight, decorative components for automotive interiors. One example is a glove box cover made with Bayblend® PC+ABS blend resin. Dynamic temperature control and the material ensure outstanding surface quality, even when using physical foaming such as the MuCell® process, allowing manufacturers to skip an additional coating step.
