Task

Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) set out to create a new device to alleviate these risks. The product, the UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guard, is a single-use, anti-needle-stick device for pre-filled injectable syringes. It allows the syringe and needle to pull away from the patient and into the guard.

Challenge

BD’s UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guards are composed of two telescoping thermoplastic components and a spring. To manufacture this medical device, BD needed to find a material that was not only durable and transparent, but also offered improved flow and would easily release from the mold.

Solution

Medical-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate from Covestro was the optimal material choice for BD‘s UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guard. The body component of the device is injection molded with the Makrolon® resin. BD chose Makrolon® polycarbonate because it flows well and is easily released from the mold, increasing design flexibility for complicated parts. In addition, this material’s high strength and transparency making it easier to see syringe markings, labels and contents.
