Robust and splash-proof – mobile LED work lamps

Workplace lamps have to illuminate the place where they are in use perfectly, while at the same time being robust and working reliably despite a variety of environmental factors. Makrolon® is ideal as a construction material for lamp components as it is able to cope with these very different requirements. This is demonstrated in the Magnum Future mobile spotlight.

This lightweight lamp is fitted with LEDs as a light source. A diffuser made from Makrolon® 2405 ensures optimal dispersion of the LED light. The translucent polycarbonate is tailor-made for use in light and lamp technology applications. Its high level of light transmission and outstanding light-diffusing properties ensure that the diffuser homogenizes the spots of light from the LEDs with little loss. Thanks to the high impact resistance of the material, the diffuser can withstand impacts and vibrations such as those that can occur during the assembly or transport of the lamps. Another advantage of the thermoplastic material is the low level of isotropic shrinkage and very limited tendency of warpage. These two characteristics combined with the low water absorption of the material to provide a high level of dimensional stability in the diffuser, which contributes to the tightness of the whole lamp construction. In this way, the LED lamp fulfills the IP54 (International Protection) class of protection. The electronics inside are therefore safely protected from splashing and dust.

The main properties of Makrolon® 2405 polycarbonate are:

  • Usable for lighting technology, e.g. for transparent or translucent covers of luminaires
  • Solid, impact-resistant and shatterproof
  • Dimensionally stable with high reproduction accuracy
  • High heat and chemical resistance
  • Low viscosity and easy demolding
  • Outstanding flow properties, particularly well-suited for components with large flow path/wall thickness ratios
