Sleek and swift - the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport is one of the fastest super sports cars on the road. To fit with its sporty, open-roadster vibe while satisfying its safety commitment, Bugatti chose automotive glazing using Makrolon® polycarbonate for the car’s panoramic roof.

The vehicle’s targa top, incorporating the transparent panoramic roof, is removable in a few steps. The panoramic roof is made by KRD Sicherheitstechnik GmbH from 5 mm-thick solid sheets of Makrolon®  GP grey 722 polycarbonate. Covestro produces the sheets using Makrolon®  AG2677 polycarbonate.

Makrolon® polycarbonate sheet’s light weight, contributes to an overall lightweight roof. When compared with glass at the same thickness, Makrolon® polycarbonate can reduce the part’s weight by up to 50 percent. At 1,230 mm long and up to 1,050 mm wide, the roof weighs no more than 5.6 kg.

The sheets are printed with a black border, then thermoformed and coated with Momentive Performance Materials GmbH’s AS4000 polysiloxane wet-coat system, translating to a highly scratch- and weather-resistant roof. Then edges are milled, and BBG GmbH applies polyurethane edging. The resulting component successfully satisfies Bugatti’s stringent test regulations and the application’s narrow tolerance requirements, all while being functional and aesthetically pleasing.
