Despite an original idea and successful design, the challenges facing the development team at Pedrali were still considerable. The furniture manufacturer required a polymeric material for its Rubik bar stool that had glass-like transparency and could be produced in a single production step.

Thus, Pedrali seeked Covestro for help. Covestro offers high-transparent grades of Makrolon® polycarbonate for the furniture industry that are a good fit for the project. Makrolon® allows designers outstanding design freedom due to its melt flow properties which can be processed efficiently and cost-effectively in a wide processing window using injection molding.

Aura® color technology from Covestro offers another benefit to the furniture manufacturer. This technology allows the plastic to be infused briefly in a solution to add transparent color after production and is ideal for customized design of small pieces, such as the Rubik barstool.
