With automotive engineering moving toward the development of transparent surfaces and roofs, these components are becoming design objects. A particular focus is on large panoramic roofs and associated three-dimensional designs in the roof, roof bezels and tail areas.
Covestro´s innovative automotive glazing technology enables the use of lightweight polycarbonates that reduces fuel consumption and helps increase energy efficiency. Makrolon® polycarbonate possesses excellent optical properties, such as transparency, high impact resistance and design freedom. Replacing glass with Makrolon® glazing can reduce component weight by up to 50 percent, thereby reducing a vehicle’s center of gravity. This weight reduction also results in a substantial decrease in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Incorporation of Bayblend® (PC+ABS; PC+ASA blend) and Makroblend® ((PC+PBT; PC+PET blend) enables designers to integrate window frames through a two-shot molding process. That same process can create glass-like surfaces that can be used for transparent roof panels or opaque applications, such as roof bezels.
