Powerful polycarbonate

Polycarbonate from Covestro for Electricity Management

The modern world runs on electricity. For this to be possible, electricity management products must be reliable, safe and durable, as do the materials from which they’re made. Polycarbonate,
co-polycarbonate and polycarbonate blend resins from Covestro are up for the challenge.

Products used for electricity management must withstand environments that affect their design and manufacture. Whether an electric vehicle charging station, energy meter or circuit breaker, these applications must endure rough conditions, such as high currents and severe weather. With its portfolio of polycarbonates, co-polycarbonates and polycarbonate blends, Covestro relieves manufacturers’ concerns about materials, allowing them to focus on the design and performance of their products.

Parts in electricity management applications not only have to fulfill aesthetic demands, but must also comply with stringent quality requirements and safety regulations. Test methods and classifications must be consistent with the requirements of end-use applications, including electricity meter housings, equipment housings and lamp sockets. We provide grades of polycarbonate materials with UL flame-retardant ratings.

In addition to flame retardance, electricity management products require properties including heat resistance, impact and chemical resistance, and manufacturability.

Reinforced grades of Makrolon® polycarbonate can be used over a broad temperature range (-100ºC to +130ºC), which makes Makrolon® polycarbonate suitable for housing components in electrical distribution boxes. Because of its toughness and heat resistance, manufacturers turn to flame-retardant grades of Bayblend® (PC+ABS; PC+ASA blend) resin for cable and wiring ducts, electrically insulating pipes and conductor rails.
