Polycarbonate used in life-saving medical device

Materials at the heart of medical device

During sudden cardic arrest, a safe, reliable and effective automated external defibrillator (AED) device can be a lifesaver. AED manufacturers desire the same characteristics when choosing materials for their products.

The Powerheart® G5 device’s battery case and housing from Cardiac Science uses Bayblend® FR3010 PC+ABS blend resin from Covestro.

Cardiac Science Corporation wanted to update the technology and design of its next-generation Powerheart® G5 AED. The company sought a material that offered strength, impact resistance and an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) flame rating for the device’s battery case and housing.

Because the Powerheart® G5 AED is used by emergency service and military customers in rugged conditions, the device must be durable without sacrificing life-saving features. The AED outershell had to pass drop and durability tests while meeting quality protocols and product development timelines.

The company chose Bayblend® FR3010 polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC+ABS) blend resin from Covestro for its excellent impact performance, overall strength and UL flame rating of 94 V-0. The corporate color palette for Cardiac Science was color-matched using pre-colored plastics created via LEDA® compounded color technology from Covestro. The company’s unique and distinct orange and gray corporate color hues were matched at Covestro’s Color Competence and Design Center.
