Polycarbonate is the ideal lens material for corrective eyeglasses and sunglasses due to its light weight, impact resistance, durability and comfort. However, not all polycarbonate for eyewear is created equal.

Task

When original equipment manufacturer Jiangsu Sigo Optical Co., Ltd. decided to upgrade the polycarbonate material used for its corrective and sunglass lenses, it turned to Covestro for a material that would provide improved optical purity and production yield.

Challenge

Jiangsu Sigo Optical needed a lens-quality polycarbonate material that met a number of market requirements including high optical purity, transmission, shatter resistance, mechanical strength, comfort and toughness.

Solution

Jiangsu Sigo Optical utilized two Covestro materials formulated specifically for the optical/ophthalmic market: Makrolon® DP1-1821 polycarbonate for corrective lenses and Makrolon® LQ2887 polycarbonate for sunglass lenses. In addition to supplying the materials, Covestro also provided valuable on-site technical support to ensure the process of qualifying the materials went smoothly. Covestro helped the project team scale up the new material on production lines in just three months.

Makrolon® polycarbonate - the state of the art material for a broad range of design applications that possesses phenomenal properties

  • Both material grades feature easy release properties, allowing for easy removal from the mold.
  • Makrolon® DP1-1821 polycarbonate offers high optical purity, transmission and shatter resistance, making it an ideal material for corrective lenses.
  • Makrolon® DP1-1821 polycarbonate is UV-stabilized, and therefore remains relatively unchanged when exposed to UV light.
  • Makrolon® LQ2887 polycarbonate provides UV protection from wavelengths up to 400 nanometers, which blocks both UVA and UVB rays, making it a suitable choice for sunglass lenses.
  • Makrolon® LQ2887 polycarbonate offers a thin and fashionable design combined with impact resistance, and is fit for outdoor sports such as mountain biking and beach volleyball.
