Advancement in gastrointestinal imaging is an easy pill to swall

Revolutionary capsule endoscope possible with Covestro polycarbonate

Advancement in gastrointestinal imaging is an easy pill to swallow

Patients and healthcare professionals alike desire minimally invasive procedures. For those patients requiring gastrointestinal imaging, a traditional endoscopy was their only option. Until now.

Capsule Endoscope
Makrolon® polycarbonate from Covestro is utilized for the capsule endoscope’s shell, enabling the camera to have a large filming angle.

For the examination, the patient swallows a small capsule, which is transported like food through the digestive tract while delivering images of the stomach and intestinal walls. Because the capsules are ingested, Shangxian Minimal Invasive needed materials that met extremely stringent requirements.

Capsule endoscopes are composed of a miniature camera, digital processor system and a transceiver for wireless data transmission. The capsule endoscopes are taken with water, just like a pill. The materials must be biocompatible and corrosion-resistant, while also enabling a large filming angle.

Shangxian Minimal Invasive chose Makrolon® polycarbonate from Covestro. This material is biocompatible and impervious to stomach acid and alkaline intestinal flora, two crucial requirements for this medical technology. Makrolon® polycarbonate also offers design freedom, enabling a wide filming angle. The material’s transparency allows for clear, well-resolved images. These important characteristics contribute to more accurate imaging and therefore better diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases.
