Connected drug delivery: The future is now

Polycarbonates open new possibilities for patients

Connected drug delivery:
The future is now

Dispensed precisely. Delivered on time. Connecting healthcare providers to patients. This is life-saving medicine, reimagined. It’s the future of drug delivery – right at our fingertips.

Covestro introduces a drug delivery concept utilizing Makrolon® polycarbonate and Direct Skinning/Direct Coating technology.

Task

Engineers from the Application Development Group at Covestro developed a concept device to demonstrate the possibilities of what the future could be like for healthcare manufacturers and patients. It was designed to be user-friendly, and increase both comfort and patient adherence.

Challenge

Typical drug delivery devices are not always approachable or comfortable, making it difficult for patients to adhere to treatment. Also, traditional spray coating methods utilized can limit the design possibilities for these devices, perpetuating the cycle.

Solution

The exterior is injection-molded from clear Makrolon® polycarbonate, so that a digital monitor, indicators and light guides can be incorporated. With thin walls, the small and lightweight device can fit in a pocket, purse or backpack. The concept highlights efficient manufacturing possibilities with Direct Coating technology encapsulating the body to create a hermetic and tamper-resistant seal. The outer surface features an exceptional tactile finish with both high gloss and matte finishes.
