Task

The Embr Wave intelligent bracelet from Embr Labs makes the wearer feel cooler or warmer by 5 degrees in a few minutes. Embr Labs wanted to communicate with the user through an intuitive, color-based system. Covestro helped select the right material and optimize the design for optical performance.

Challenge

Embr Labs wanted to use a frosted light pipe with LEDs as the user interface. The polycarbonate needed to be translucent enough that it would hide the LED point sources. It also needed to be UV-stable so that it would not degrade after prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Solution

Based on the requirements, Embr Labs chose Makrolon® 2407 polycarbonate, which offers proven performance for electronics, IT and communications applications. For this application, diffusers and optical brighteners were compounded into the plastic to achieve the desired visual effect.
