When engineering its Q-FLO™ valve connector, Infusion Innovations Inc. (I³) sought an approved and established material that met U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements along with a proven safety and functional profile.

I³ selected Makrolon® Rx1805 polycarbonate from Covestro for the Q-FLO™ because of the material’s strength, clarity, lipid/chemical resistance, biocompatibility and gamma stability. The medical grade polycarbonate meets IS0 10993-1 and USP Class VI tests for up to 30-day contact with human tissue.

“The Makrolon® polycarbonate not only met the stringent requirements, it also offered the level of chemical resistance required for use with cytotoxic and nuclear medicine,” said Babak Nemati, Ph.D., president & CEO of I³.

Q-FLO™ offers improved safety and convenience for healthcare workers administering cytotoxic drugs to patients and is cleared by the FDA for use in reconstituting, dispensing/transferring, administering, and disposal of potentially hazardous fluids.

The main properties of Makrolon® Rx1805 polycarbonate are:

  • Glass-like transparency
  • Chemical resistance
  • High strength
  • Biocompatibility
