A bright idea for bicycles

The bounds of children’s imaginations are limitless. While some things they dream up are simply not feasible in reality, some ideas are – like one boy’s desire for a light-up bicycle.

Phantom Frames
Phantom Frames creates the first transparent LED bike frame combining the strength of Makrolon® polycarbonate from Covestro with LED lights.


When Phantom Frames’ founder and president learned of his six-year-old son’s wish for a bike that could “light up”, he seized the opportunity to develop a transparent bike frame with internal illumination. That wish turned into a bright new business.


Phantom Frames developed and patented the first transparent bike frame to transmit light. Since the company is creating children’s bicycles, the quality and consistency of the materials used is very important. Phantom Frames sought not only a high-performance material, but also technical support.


The durability of Makrolon® 2807 thermoplastic from Covestro, paired with its lighter weight compared with standard metal bike frames, made it the ideal material for Phantom Frames. The bike is available in five colors with flashing features. The material’s glass-like transparency allows more light to pass through the material, which is important for this application. From a processing standpoint this medium viscosity grade of Makrolon® polycarbonate releases easily from the mold.

Makrolon® 2807 polycarbonate has glass-like transparency allowing more light to pass through the material and enhancing aesthetics.

This polycarbonate grade offers excellent impact resistance while also being lightweight.

The material’s viscosity level gives it an average ability to flow.

When formed, Makrolon® 2807 polycarbonate releases easily from the mold.
