Task

To improve the way organs are preserved during transportation, TransMedics, Inc. developed the Organ Care System (OCS™). This portable system delivers warm, nutrient-rich blood to the organ, allowing it to function outside of the body and enabling organ optimization and assessment.

Challenge

TransMedics has three OCS™ products – OCS™ Heart, OCS™ Lung and OCS™ Liver, each of which has three primary components: a portable console with a wireless monitor, a disposable perfusion set and nutrient-enriched solutions. The company needed tough and transparent materials for these devices.

Solution

The perfusion set’s clear enclosure, which protects the organs, uses Makrolon® 2458 and Makrolon® Rx1452 polycarbonates from Covestro. Additionally, the attached connectors utilize Makrolon® Rx1805 polycarbonate. Beyond supplying the materials, Covestro provided technical support and shared regulatory knowledge to help further the development cycle.
