Like a helmet protects one’s head, housings play a key role in protecting LED luminaires. Luminaires in damp, dusty and harsh environments need housings made from strong, high-performing materials.

Task

Belgian manufacturer VLUX developed the Futurix series of LED lamps to illuminate industrial and outdoor environments including warehouses and parking structures. This is not an easy task as the fixtures needed to be able to withstand outdoor use and exposure to all types of weather conditions.

Challenge

For the lamp covers in the Futurix series, VLUX had requirements for transmission and half-power beam angle (HPA), while giving proper consideration to the required wall thickness and complex shape of the lamp covers. A tailor-made material was needed to satisfy these demanding specifications.

Solution

To achieve a strong, weatherproof, yet inviting lighting system, Covestro specially developed Makrolon® 2207 polycarbonate for the lamp covers. This material meets VLUX’s needs for light transmission and HPA. The translucent, white-colored material is flame retardant or resistant to burn and tough enough to withstand high impacts, enabling the LEDs to endure long exposure to diverse environmental conditions. This made it an excellent choice to protect the LED luminaires against dust and water spray.

Makrolon® polycarbonate – the state of the art design all-rounder with phenomenal material properties

Makrolon® 2207 polycarbonate offers a high level of toughness, enabling it to withstand exposure to industrial and outdoor environments.

The material has good heat resistance and flame retardancy, therefore, the Makrolon® 2207 polycarbonate resists burning and remains relatively unchanged when exposed to heat.

Makrolon® 2207 polycarbonate’s low shrinkage and low tendency to warp contribute to the tightness of the luminaire construction.

With high dimensional stability and accuracy, Makrolon® 2207 polycarbonate is able to retain its size and shape when exposed to heat or humidity.

White Makrolon® 2207 polycarbonate is a warm-white colored, diffusive grade, spreading light throughout a space and producing a pleasant atmosphere without glare.
