Rise and shine

Polycarbonate from Covestro Awakens the Senses

Just as the sun rises and gradually brightens, the Philips Wake-up Light mimics the effects of natural daybreak. It uses a combination of sound and light therapy to waken users and leave them feeling refreshed. To make this product possible, Philips needed a high-performance material specifically suited for lighting applications.

Offering different brightness settings, the Philips Wake-up Light allows users to program the device to achieve their optimal wake-up conditions. The device’s sunrise-simulating process takes approximately 30 minutes and includes a gentle sound to wake users.

To achieve this natural-looking lighting, Philips needed a transparent, translucent material and a reflective white thermoplastic ideal for lighting applications. In addition, for its latest Wake-up Light model, HF3500, Philips wanted a material offering a good combination of light transmittance, diffusion and reflection.

Makrolon® 2405 polycarbonate from Covestro fulfilled these requirements.

This general purpose, low-viscosity polycarbonate grade is available in transparent, translucent and opaque colors. For this application, Covestro developed specific colorations of Makrolon® 2405 polycarbonate: translucent color 021177 and transparent 550115.

To achieve the reflective white look Philips desired for specific product components, the company turned to Makrolon® reflective white (RW) 2405 polycarbonate. Reflective white polycarbonate grades are characterized by their high efficiency in reflecting visible light, while also providing outstanding design freedom and very high brightness.

The exceptional properties offered by Makrolon® 2405 polycarbonate and Makrolon® RW2405 polycarbonate surpassed those of a previously used material, and more than satisfied Philips’ needs for its Wake-up Lights.

The main properties of Makrolon® 2405 polycarbonate grades are:

  • General purpose
  • Low viscosity
  • Easy release
  • Processed by injection molding
  • Available in transparent, translucent and opaque colors

The main properties of Makrolon® RW2405 polycarbonate grades are:

  • Highly reflective
  • Outstanding design freedom
  • Processed by injection molding
  • Very high brightness
