Supporting sustainable solutions by innovative products
Our flagship Makrolon® polycarbonate is 100 percent recyclable, making it inherently sustainable. In addition, Covestro has offered products that contain post-industrial used plastics for more than a decade. We also offer polycarbonate blends utilizing post-consumer recyclates as feedstock. This feedstock can be found in sustainable grades of flame-retardant Bayblend® (PC+ABS; PC+ASA blend) and Makroblend® (PC+PBT; PC+PET blend) with target applications in the IT, electrical and electronics, and automotive industries.
Examples are Bayblend® R-FR610 with up to 75% post-consumer and/or post-industrial PC feedstock or Makroblend® GR235M with more than 80% recycled content.
Renewable materials, such as polylactic acid, are readily available and allow the creation of bio-based polycarbonate blend resins, like certain grades of Makroblend® resin, with property profiles close to those of compounds made with virgin raw materials. Makroblend® resins made with polylactic acid have an outstanding, well-balanced profile of physical, thermal and mechanical properties combined with low greenhouse gas emissions. Utilizing biopolymers as blending partners for polycarbonate provides more opportunity to develop sustainable, new materials with unique property profiles.
