AURA® Infusion Technology – Improved UV Resistance for Polycarbonates

Polycarbonate offers a number of properties – including dimensional stability, and impact and heat resistance – that make it very attractive for outdoor applications. Its only drawback: it yellows upon prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. This poses a dilemma for part designers and manufacturers who are just as concerned about appearance as performance.

Dilemma solved, thanks to AURA® infusion technology from Covestro. This technology enhances polycarbonate’s UV stability and resistance to yellowing, making it one of the best options for transparent outdoor applications, such as lenses, covers and enclosures.

Covestro developed AURA® infusion technology to infuse organic materials, originally colorants, into already-molded or extruded thermoplastic parts by submerging them into an aqueous solution at temperatures below the boiling point of water.

For UV stability that rivals that of acrylic, UV additives are infused into Makrolon® polycarbonate from Covestro. The AURA® process infuses ten times the concentration of the UV absorber five mils into the surface of the polymer, creating a UV barrier. These molecules are fixed in the polymer matrix and will not delaminate like a coating. Furthermore, the high surface concentration creates only a minimal decrease in light transmission. For these reasons, AURA® infusion technology represents a “quantum leap” in efficacy when compared with compounded UV materials using other technologies.

This eco-friendly process works in a water-based medium with a minimum of organic additives. The process liquid and processing solvents are reclaimed and reused within the system. AURA® infusion technology has been licensed exclusively to Omnifusion LLC, for worldwide use.

The main advantages of this technology are:

  • This technology enhances Makrolon® polycarbonate’s UV stability and resistance to yellowing.
  • Eco-friendly process
